This unique lamp incorporates a genuine RollsRoyce 250-C18 compressor wheel from a Hughes 500 helicopter, an iconic model known for its versatility and reliability in both civilian and military applications. The Hughes 500, also known as the “LOACH” or Little Bird in the military, has been a staple in the helicopter industry since its introduction in the 1960s, widely used for search and rescue, news reporting, and powerline maintenance.
The flight history of the compressor wheel used in this lamp is unknown as it was acquired from a helicopter museum in New York state. One of the most famous H500’s was Miss Claude IV flown by Hugh Mills during the Vietnam War. There are several stories of flying valor, but we’ll share what we believe to be one of the most amazing. This mission involving "Miss Clawd IV" happened when Mills and his crewman, Parker encountered an NVA heavy weapons platoon. Mills fired the helicopter's minigun at close range, and despite intense return fire, managed to neutralize many enemy soldiers. During the skirmish, the helicopter was hit 25 times but stayed airborne. They continued fighting until they ran out of ammunition, after which a Cobra gunship provided support, allowing them to escape safely. This mission exemplified the high-risk, high-reward nature of scout helicopter operations during the Vietnam War. Scout pilots had a 5 week life expectancy in Vietnam because they essentially drew enemy fire so gunship copters could destroy NVA units.
